The Devil is in the Detail - The Best Car Mods Never Ignore The Small Stuff

There's a moment at every car show, every meet, every casual car park gathering, where someone's build just stops people in their tracks. Not always because it's got the boldest engine bay or the most elaborate wrap. Sometimes it's the fact that everything has been thought about and no small detail has been ignored. It's the obsessive attention to detail that so often separates a solid build from an exceptional one.

At Paintmodz, we design and manufacture car dress up parts for a wide range of makes and models, and whilst we love a big engine bay transformation as much as the next person, some of our favourite parts are the ones that fly a little under the radar. The subtle upgrades that reward closer inspection. The stuff the untrained eye might not notice immediately, but experienced car fans absolutely will.

Key Covers: The Most-Handled Part of Your Car

You handle your car key multiple times every single day. It's in your hand every time you lock and unlock, every time you show someone your build, every time you pull it out at a meet.

For most people, it's a stock grey plastic shell that Ford, BMW or whoever else shipped it in. Nobody gave it a second thought. We of course, gave it quite a bit of thought.

Our Ford 'Keyless Start' Key Cover clips straight over the existing factory shell which means no drilling, no tools, no drama. It's professionally painted in the same way as any of our larger parts: prepared, primed and finished to a high standard.

You can go colour-coded to match the bodywork for a seamless, OEM-plus look, or go for something that contrasts and pops. Add one of our ST or RS gel badge inlays and the whole thing becomes its own little statement piece.

BMW owners aren't left out either. Our BMW Keyless Start Key Cover brings the same level of finish to a different keyless shell, painted or hydrodipped to suit your build theme.

Shark Fin Aerial Mk3/3.5 Ford Focus / Mk8 Ford Fiesta

Shark Fin Aerials: Kill the Mast, Keep the Reception

The standard Ford mast aerial is a proper eyesore. It's tall, it wobbles, and on a Focus or Fiesta it can actually foul on the spoiler which isn't ideal. The fix is simple though and it looks brilliant.

Our 'Shark Fin' Aerial for the Mk3/3.5 Focus (and specific Mk8 Fiesta vehicles) fits over the existing aerial base once the mast is removed, has a flat bottom to follow the roofline properly, and houses a circuit board to maintain radio reception. It's available in painted finishes to match your car, raw plastic if you'd rather paint it yourself, or a custom hydrodip if you fancy something a bit different.

Mk8/8.5 Fiesta and Mk2 Puma owners have their own version, the Proform New 'Shark Fin' Aerial, which is designed to fit to the different aerial base shape found on those models. Same great result, a cleaner roofline, no ugly mast and a radio that actually works.

It's the kind of mod that takes maybe five minutes to fit and does the top of your car justice.

Genuine Ford Rear Wiper Arm Focus, Fiesta & Puma

Rear Wiper Arms: They're at Eye Level, Sort Them

This is one that catches people out surprisingly often. You've invested time and money into the engine bay, the exterior, the interior - and then there it is, sitting smack in the middle of your tailgate in faded grey plastic. The rear wiper arm. It's practically at eye level on a hatchback, you better believe that everyone sees it.

We do painted and hydrodipped genuine Ford rear wiper arms for a solid range of models. The Mk4/4.5 Focus, Mk8/8.5 Fiesta and Mk2/2.5 Puma version is painted in gloss black or hydrodipped, a genuine Ford part that fits exactly as it should, finished to the same standard as everything else we do. Because it's a genuine OEM part underneath, it works exactly as you'd expect it to.

Mk3 and Mk3.5 Focus owners (hatchback and estate, including ST and RS variants) have the Genuine Ford Rear Wiper for the Mk3/3.5, which comes complete with a new wiper blade. Just be sure to select the right variant for your model, the blade mechanism is slightly different between the Mk3 and Mk3.5, so it's worth double-checking before you order.

One small detail. Properly noticeable result.

Genuine Ford Heated 'Mist' Washer Jets Painted

Washer Jets: Hiding in Plain Sight

Here's one that even a lot of serious enthusiasts overlook: washer jets. They're right there, mounted into the bonnet, in everyone's line of sight when the bonnet is shut. And nine times out of ten, they're standard plastic grey. Even on cars that have had significant work done.

We do painted genuine Ford mist washer jets in both non-heated and heated variants. These aren't just slapped with paint and sent out - they go through the same prep process as our other painted parts: prepared, primed, wet-sanded and finished properly. The result is a pair of washer jets that look like they were colour-coded from the factory.

The non-heated mist jets fit Mk6 and Mk7/7.5 Fiesta and Ford Transit models from 2012 onwards. The heated version fits all Mk2 and Mk3 Focus variants, including ST and RS. As a bonus, the mist-style jets deliver a better spread across the windscreen than the standard pin-type jets, so no more fiddling around with a pin trying to adjust the aim.

Small upgrade. Cleaner bonnet. Sorted.

The Bigger Picture: Building It Right

The point of all this isn't just the individual parts. It's the mindset. A build where the key is colour-coded, the aerial is a tidy fin, the rear wiper arm matches the rest of the car, and the washer jets aren't a pair of dull grey lumps. hat's a build that tells people you genuinely care about the whole thing. Not just the obvious stuff.

If you're thinking about where to start with your own build, our colour theory styling guide is worth a read. It breaks down how to approach colour choices across engine bay, interior and exterior parts without ending up with something that looks like it was designed by committee.

If you're going big on the engine bay, our dress up part bundles are a great way to save money and keep everything coordinated.
